Will Artificial intelligence take away all our jobs?
An optimistic view towards what to come
A recent survey from online education company pluralsight indicates that 74% of IT professionals across the US and UK feel that AI will make their day to day skills obsolete.
Did this figure shock you? Probably not. Nowadays the second hardest thing to do in the IT world after getting a job is going through a single meeting without someone mentioning the “A word” - Artificial Intelligence, the new buzz word that took the whole world by a whim since the launch of Chat GPT 3.
I’m not here to talk about the dangers of AI and carry a cardboard sign saying BEWARE AI. I am here to share the positive possible aspect of the rise of AI.
Warning *Slightly heavy economic concepts incoming so stay with me*
As you all probably know, we live in a consumer based economy. As in the economy flourishes when people buy goods and services. Consequently, If companies create a technology that causes unemployment to skyrocket, no one will have any money to buy the services offered by these companies. In plain words, If Chat GPT took all our jobs, how will we have any money to pay Chat GPT subscription. It’s a lose lose situation.
Amr Awadallah, Stanford Alumnus, AI engineer, CEO of Cloudera and Co-founder of Vectra has a very interesting view on how the future will turn out regarding the job market.
Amr believes that with the surplus generated by AI that will go into the hands of business owners, since using AI services will, without a doubt, be cheaper than hiring, training and paying insurance for employees. The governments will mandate an AI tax to be paid by the enterprise that uses primarily AI to operate in a specific country.
For the sake of simplicity let us take Saudi Arabia as an example, let’s say a company like PWC wants to penetrate the Saudi market with their brand new, AI empowered, Operation. The Saudi government will require a hefty tax to be paid by PWC that will be used to provide the Saudi citizens with a universal income in order to maintain a healthy and sustainable economy.
Consequently, all major governments will follow the same approach to maintain their economy in a balanced state.
So there you have it ! Yes, maybe AI will take your job, but it doesn’t necessarily have to go after your paycheck.
